Scientists study the sand of D-Day beaches 80 + years after the Normandy invasion, the French coastlines where battles occurred, are "bleeding metal." After another 100 years or so, the wounds of the D-Day beaches will be fully healed, unlike the wounds of human war history and the ones of the warfighters unlucky enough to bear witness to said history.
