Liz Truss jibe leaves Tory Shadow Chancellor squirming
11 de octubre de 2026 · 18m
In today’s episode of The Daily T, Camilla Tominey and Tim Stanley speak to Andrew Griffith, the shadow chancellor, from the Conservative Party conference.
Camilla and Tim challenge Griffith on the party’s pledges to cut welfare and scrap inheritance tax on family homes, with Tim asking how he would respond to a claim that he was “repeating Liz Truss’s mistake of promising something that country is not in a position to fiscally underwrite”.
The shadow chancellor defends his party’s policies, saying they have been “forensically set out” and are not a repeat of the Truss mini-Budget. He claims that “balancing the books runs in [his] DNA” and clarifies that his aim to abolish a tax in every Budget under a Conservative government is an ambition, not a promise.
Griffith also denies that the Conservatives have regained a reputation as “the nasty party”, and criticises Labour’s “hope handout” strategy when it comes to unemployment and benefits.
